Plot and Themes
Published in 1862, "Fathers and Sons" is a masterpiece of Russian literature that captures a pivotal moment in the nation's history. The novel centers on the deep ideological and social clash between two generations of the Russian intelligentsia: the liberal aristocrats of the 1840s (the "fathers") and the radical, democratic youth of the 1860s (the "sons").
The protagonist, Yevgeny Bazarov, is a young, brilliant medical student who proudly declares himself a nihilist. He completely rejects all established authority, religion, traditional family values, art, and love. For Bazarov, nothing has value unless it serves a practical, scientific purpose. His chief ideological opponent is Pavel Petrovich Kirsanov, an elegant aristocrat who fiercely defends nobility, honor, high culture, and the traditions of the past.
The Climax and Fatal Downfall
The ultimate challenge to Bazarov’s strict nihilistic theory comes when he falls deeply and painfully in love with Anna Odintsova, a wealthy and independent widow. Confronted by an overwhelming emotion he once dismissed as mere "romantic nonsense," Bazarov experiences a profound internal crisis. His rational worldview begins to crumble. In a tragic turn of events, Bazarov accidentally contracts typhus while performing an autopsy on a local peasant and dies. Facing his imminent death, his cynical shell strips away, revealing a proud, powerful, yet deeply isolated soul.
Literary Legacy
Ivan Turgenev crafted more than just a psychological drama; he created a vivid historical record of a changing Russia on the eve of the emancipation of the serfs. The novel popularized the term "nihilist" worldwide, and Bazarov remains one of literature's most compelling symbols of revolutionary youth defying the old world.
